Mending to Save the Planet
Clothing and Textile Waste is currently one of the biggest issues today when discussing the destruction of our planet Earth. In USA alone, over 11.3 million tons of clothing go to a landfill every year, and people are wearing their clothes an average of only 7-10 times before throwing them out. There is a clothing landfill in South America (Atacama) that is so big it can be seen from space, and every second a garbage truck dumps another full ton of unsold clothing into it. Yes, really! Here at Somewhat Sacred Studios, we are horrified to learn about the global clothing crisis, and we are desperate to help.
By mending your clothing instead of throwing out and buying new, you are not only keeping that one garment out of the landfill, but you are also choosing not to support fast fashion practices of disposable clothes! Every time you don't give your money to the fast fashion industry, you are doing your part to build a better world!
Jaqi Donlon, sewist
I have been sewing and mending clothes for pretty much my entire life. That's over 20 years of experience! I specialize in visible mending, including patches and Sashiko, but am also well-practiced in invisible mending as well. I offer Mending-While-U-Wait services in my booth at The Market on 6th Ave, where I can quickly sew up a hole or patch your shirt while you wait for about 20 minutes. My price range for these kind of repair jobs is from $5-30 - less than the cost of a new garment!
If you have a particularly tricky issue or a lot of clothes to mend, I may want to spend more time on the job. In these cases, I will take your garment to work on in my sewing studio and you will be able to pick it up within a week. The price range for these kind of repair jobs is $10-75. My rates are determined by my level of experience and my desire to keep clothes out of landfills. Please let me know if you have a situation that requires a sliding scale - I want to fix your clothes!
Please note that I do not work on silk or heavy leather. Hemming denim will always be a weeklong job. I do not do alterations at this time, only mending. If you would like to help me learn alterations, please let me know so we can schedule a free alterations session.
